hi, I am working on a music documentary. The music is from the 60's to today. Where can I go to find out about how I as the maker of this film can use these songs, where do I register them etc etc.
thanks dan.

i have no idea really ... but i ghuess u would have to contact each record label or artist u wanted to use and pay them money most likely ..... how ever if u take a song u want to use and get someone to do a cover but just change it enough so its not the same song u can use it with no copywrite probs 🙂

there are specific companies that deal in clearing music for use, my advice is just to google around until you find a company you feel like dealing with....i just found www.musicclearance.com so maybe that would be a good place to start....but there will be a fee.

or as jamie said, you can approach the publisher of each track and as for permission. either way, prepare yourself for possible licensing fees as there is normally a negotiable fee as well as the royalty payments.

remember, that getting permission to use a track doesn't waive the royalty payments...as a filmmaker you need a license to use the music, and if the documentary is broadcast, then the broadcaster has to pay royalties to the PRS. if you sell the doc. in either video or DVD format, then the MCPS will get involved with collecting the royalties.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES GET SOMEONE TO COVER A TRACK A CHANGE IT SLIGHTLY!.

that is quite frankly a ridiculous thing to say. the only thing that will do is get you sued.
