I have just shot my first short on Mini DV, and am trying to find out what software/hardware i need to edit the film myself on my computer. I have heard either Adobe Premeier Pro or Avid was the best. If anyone could give me some advice as to my next steps in putting the film together i would really be grateful.

Please read the Internet Filmmaker's FAQ before posting. Both of your questions are already answered there... and even linked to from the home page of this site(!).

well if your a beginner, get to know editing. But i would learn Avid over Premiere. Thought both of them are great editing programs, Avid is Industry Standard. Meaning that the program is used by professionals for real time film.

I use Adobe Premiere, because i can rip the program off from Kazaa or some sharing network. Avid on the other hand you cant, because when you get the program, you have to insert a USB Key in order to activate the program. And still that program is around $500 - $1000.

Adobe Premiere, is around the same, but again you can download a 30 day trial and find some sort of crack to make it a everyday tool. Again im familiar with Premiere, as well as photoshop, but not familiar with Avid.

If you want to ask questions about Avid, ask Airwalk. He uses the program.

Avid may be the standard today, but, to be honest, I'm not convinced that it will be in five years time. Avid's problem is that every new feature they add to their low-end products cannibalises the market for their expensive high-end products: Premiere is pushing up the food chain on the PC and Apple doesn't have to worry about adding features in Final Cut, because they make their money on hardware, not software. Certainly a lot of people I know who'd have bought Avid systems five years ago for video editing are buying Final Cut Pro systems today.

Really though, any one of Avid, Final Cut Pro or Premiere will give you a decent edit and a solid grounding in editing on a computer. Avid just has the clunkiest interface of the three if you're used to using a computer... but I'm sure it's better than the other two if you're used to sticking bits of film together with tape. There are some very nice features on Avid, but the inability to use the mouse in standard ways to do the most basic things really annoys the hell out of me and it all just feels so ten years ago.

Really, does it matter what you edit on?

Isn?t the final product the same, meaning there?s no way to tell from the final product what was used to edit?

So really, isn?t the software just a personal preference?
