Hey guys, we have a movie that we're working on, and one of the locations was at this aquarium. We used a shotgun mic and the voice is quite clear. But we have this nasty hum that we can't seem to get rid of. Granted i'm not a "sound guy" at all, but in the past i've been able to remove minor hums in pro tools. But i'm having no luck with this one. The thing is, I don't really need to remove all of it, but if i can quiet it down that would be great. At this moment ADR is pretty much out of the question. If you guys have any tips of the trade that could help assist me with this dilemma, I would be much appreciative.

Thanks

Are you using noise reduction? I'm not an audio guy either, but I've found that the fidgeting with noise reduction prints can get you a pretty good sound.

I tried that, but what it ended up doing was pulling that frequency out of his voice. It makes him sound like he's in a can. I guess it is possible that that particular hum and his voice are on the same frequency, which means i'm pretty much out of luck.

Find a way to add some character saying "What's that damn noise? My ears are humming." and go along with the scene as if the humm was intentional.

Use sound effects to hide the noise a bit. A carchase with squeeling tires, sirens, helicopters, gunfire and an explosion might distract from the scene a bit but it'll certainly distract from the humm as well.

Or make sure the background music masks it a bit.

Yeah none of these are great but...

That's pretty funny rjschwarz. It's a documentary, so i guess the explosions are out. ha! but music in the background is what i'll probably have to run with.

You should do as much as you can to filter it out naturally.

If you can get to the site again try to capture some ambient noise without the humm. Even some kids or whatever. Layer that over the background hoping to mask the remaining hum.

If that still isn't enough you can add a light musac track. If you are subtle about it and choose the right track it might seem as if the music was piped in at the aquariam and not added later.

If that doesn't work right add bubbles and waves and a slightly higher level of music.
