I'm preparing to shoot a commercial that requires a realistic stunt of 2 joggers running head on into each other. One jogger falls back as if he hit a concrete wall. I'm looking for a very realistic look. Just wondering how I can achieve it.
Maybe you could do it like on all those gridiron films where they slow it down and show the hit froms lots of different angles.
In fact i'm not really looking for a stunning effects treatment. It has to be realistic in terms of speed and everything else. My problem is how to shoot the actual collision to make it look real. 2 bodies banging into each other. One body recoils like it just hit a wall.
Well, you could use a green screen and actually have one of them run into a wall then edit in the other half of the screen and the background. There are a lot of little tricks you could do. You're new at editing, huh?
The easiest/quickest thing for you would be to have them jog in slow mo up until the collision then have it go to normal speed. Ofcourse if you do this, you cant have any other motions in the background.
You're in Hong Kong? I'm in Beijing, rock on.
The best way, (I believe) is to just do it. If they are jogging, the viewer won't have much time to analize the persons jogging before they hit eachother. You could have the guys wear some kind of chest padding, (joggers wear lose clothing anyways, your could hide some padding under the shirt without anybody knowing the difference). Then have the joggers actually hit eachother. As long has their heads don't hit I don't think it will be a problem. I mean, sure it might hurt a little, but it's going to look pretty darn real.
If you want the first guy to fall back like he hit a brick wall, just make sure the second guy is running faster. Well... that's my input. Good luck with it.

The way I've usually done stunts like that is to pick a sequence of shots that gives the impresion of the action without actually having to shoot it all in one go. That way the actors are never really in any danger, since they don't have to do the whole stunt: for example, one shot might be a close-up of them falling back and being caught by someone standing just off-screen behind them, and another of them falling the last foot to the ground.

As to protect the actors, I'm agreeing with MarkG here, and to go off of some of what he said...
Get a shot of Runner A going one direction (only him/her in frame) and then do the same with Runner B, the only difference being he/she is going in the opposite direction. Make sure each runner is making the shot consistent. Then in a digital effects program of your choice (e.g. After Effects) composite the two shots.
It's really best to similute stunts as often as possible, primarily to prevent injury but also to protect you possibly from a lawsuit.
Hope that helped.

Oh, I forgot to mention to play around with atypical camera angles of each of the runners as they collide and try different editing techniques, this way you don't necessarily need to simulate the collision digitally in post.
