How do I create a widescreen matte in FCP?

Hey everybody. I shot my first film for school last week. Its 16mm but I composed the shots for a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. My Professor told everyone who was shooting in widescreen (either 1.77:1 or 1.85:1) that we'd have to make mattes for FCP, probably in photoshop (although he was 'fuzzy' on how this was done).

So my question is how would one do this? Also, how could I make sure the mattes were precisely the right aspect ratios so I didn't cut off more than is necessary?

Thank you for your help! I love this forum =)

Well one way to do it is to simply make a gif that is the frame size of the FCP screen but with black bars on top and bottom and clear in the center where you want the widescreen to show through. Then put that image as the top layer so the clear bit shows through.

The other way to do it is to crop the image down to the right format. You might be able to select a number of segments and do them simultaneously. Otherwise this route might take awhile.

In the ?viewer? click on the tab ?motion?
Go to ?crop? and move the top and bottom slider to where you want it.
