Hi, wonder if anyone can advise me with a quandary Im in. Im thinking of making a short film that requires the shot footage to be played back at very fast speeds, for example a 10 minute clip played sped up so that it only lasts 30 seconds. Now I understand that if I am using a DV format in PAL that the footage is subject to 25 fps, therefore I can expect to loose a lot of visual information through dropped frames.

Are the frames lost or are they merged?

Also would using a HD video camera increase the frame rate and preserve information at such speeds?

And finally is there another film format that could do this job better?

Would greatly appreciate any input on this subject, thank you.

John

Welcome to filmmaking.net!

When you take 15,000 frames (10 minutes at 25fps) down to
750 frames (30 seconds at 25fps) you will be loosing some
frames. Not all 15,000 frames will be played.

You could shoot at a slower frame rate (though few video
cameras have that option). You could shoot the scene at 75
frames per minute and then you won't loose any of the 750
frames you shoot. Most film cameras have this option.

Hmm, what exactly is the problem here jabbason? I'm in the process of editing a film where we have a couple minutes sped up really fast, but that results in the look we're going for. certified instigator gave another solution, but it has the same end result: significantly larger visual leaps between frames than "normal" frame rates.

Losing "visual information" is simply a fact of speeding up footage, there's no way around it (unless maybe you choose a non PAL format, but that's a whole other matter). I'm curious about what your concern is with this jabbason, perhaps I'm just reading things wrong.
