what is the best way to convert hd footage to sd? Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.
That really is going to depend on what kind of camera/deck you are using. Some cameras/decks will down convert for you when you change the settings for that. It works out really nice.

My experience with this comes from the sony hdv cameras and deck (m15u). Now i know thats not necessarily true HD but I know that we have been able to downconvert from that by changing the settings. It works out great. We recently purchased the pmw-ex1 which shoots 1080p and I'll let you know when we get it, if that does as well. Granted both of those products are sony. So maybe they're the only ones that do. But I doubt that.
