So far throughout my small hobby as a film-maker I have used Microsoft Movie Maker 2 to edit and piece together my small films I have made with friends. The problem is, although Movie Maker 2 is good for editing and joining the clips in the movie, it fails on the special effects front. I was wondering if anybody would be as kind to recommend me a program to make cool special effects. If it was under ?100 then that would also be handy! Thanks!

You can't keep 'em out, they're already in!

It depends on the kind of special effects you want to do. If you're just talking about making a negative image or adding more specialized titles, a more advanced editing program like Pinnacle or Vegas should work.

On the other hand, if you want to get REALLY serious, with compositing and 3D and all sorts of crazy effects, you can get After Effects and Maya or other similar programs (but keep in mind that this kind of software is expensive and has a VERY steep learning curve).

Yeah. If you want just text effects and cool transitions then you should get Pinnacle Studio.

But if you are really looking for effects, then get Adobe After Effects ($700) and Autodesk Maya ($5000) or Autodesk 3ds Max ($3500)

They are very expensive and extremely hard to learn.

Film is a story told with moving pictures...

if you want a free program that will do basic special effects there is a program called wax that you can get at http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ it has a basic but useful particle system and can do chroma key and simple 3d. Also it comes with lots of useful transitions and titles. Not as good as things that you would have to pay for, but very useful if you havent got a lot of money!

You can also look at Blender. It's mainly a 3d app like Maya and 3ds max but it can also do some editing and compositing. Best of all... it's free.
