Me and my friend were making some movies in our spare time; nothing special just screwing around in iMovie. We've done this for a WHILE now. I've gotten very good with iMovie but we have an idea for a movie that we want to look more professional.
So I got Final Cut Express. I'm still figuring it out but I was wondering if there was a program that I could use to apply photoshop-like editing, frame-by-frame, to my video.
Also I was wondering if there was any really good (and possibly simple) effects programs or any other very useful tools for an aspiring movie-maker. 😀
Thanks for the help!
Have you thought about simply exporting single frames as jpegs from FC and editing them in photoshop?
As for cheap, easy to use fx programmes, check out the FX Home product range. Very easy and they can look spectacular ?:)?

That is how it is normally done, at least in Final Cut Pro. You can export an entire sequence as png files (and there are a lot of them when you do that) and then you fudge your settings to make sure that when you reimport them they come in at 24 frames per second or whatever ration you started at (otherwise the software will make the single frame a minute long or something).
In between the inport and export you play with the files in your favorite image editor. This is a long and somewhat painful process but I suspect hte results could be far better than any CGI software if you have some artistic talent and patience.

I recomend the fxhome products too, probally the best out there. I would personally never do it frame by frame, way to long and the effects can be done way better with a program as in the fxhome pruducts.

what you are looking for is called compositing software.
there are numerous on the market and they are usually very expensive.
fusion,nuke,shake,afterfx,toxik,flame,inferno are just a few.....
THAT is how it is done usually.
using photoshop would work if you have only a few shots with not many frames.
but this way is very unproductive and annoying.
there is a free comp app called jawshaka it is still very buggy but you might wanna try it out.
the next best thing would be the apple version of shake.
this professional tool is ridiculously cheap now because apple wants you to buy an apple system....
it is discontinued so keep that in mind should you decide to buy it
mind you that all compositing packages have no magic buttons.
those are very powerful tools that let you do a great deal but you need to learn to use them and you need to learn compositing.
both things comparably easy once you managed to get your head around.
ALL vfx in movies are done using those software packages in combination with 3d stuff coming from software like houdini, softimage, maya, lightwave, max etc.
