Bonjour, and other dated and clichéd greetings,
I have a potentially stupid question for you all. I'm looking to get a flat screen monitor (widescreen) and I wanted to know about the quality of the image. Is it just a question of the image you see on screen, or does if affect the image that you eventually burn onto dvd; the file that is created.
So, I want to know, does the quality of the onscreen image (on a flat screen monitor) relate to the image/file that you will eventually play elsewhere. Is it the same file regardless of the quality of the flat screen monitor? Is the flat screen monitor just like a temporary window to look at the footage while you are editing it, but not actually affecting it finally?
It sounds like the answer would be no, but common sense is occasionally wrong.
Yes, I know that was all as clear as mud and rather long winded.
But any help will be very much appreciated.
Cheers

PS - Any flat screen recommendations are also very welcome. If the final image is not affected, then I don't want to spend too much.
PPS - I want to say, that the first person to reply will win a luxury flatscreen monitor. But I'm not made of money, so... you will have to settle for my respect.
The resolution and quality of your monitor will not affect what goes onto the dvd. The file will be the same no matter what monitor you use. It depends more on what burner you use.

The angry aardvark is half right. The monitor doesn't change anything but the quality of the monitor can affect the DVD if you adjust colors and you are adjusting them to the incorrect colors of a bad monitor. You should always double-check by playing that DVD on a TV or other source before sending it out.

Good point, I didn't think about that.

Muchos grathias, and even more clichéd responses,
I've been thinking about the monitor issue and I think it's probably worth investing in a good one for reasons two fold. 1. If I get a lower end one, in two years it will be the equivalent of having an abacus. 2. If I can see the image with more clarity then when editing I will be able to see more clearly what needs to be changed, etc.
You mentioned about when burning it onto dvd. Would calibrating the monitor help with this problem?
Thanks to Aardvark Man and fella from San Diego.

If you don't tweak the color at all the monitor will not make a difference. Whatever goes in will come out the same color regardless of the monitor. The monitor is just a window into your data and doesn't change it.
I'm not sure how common tweaking the color is. I did it a lot because some of my exteriors were blown out with brightness. Others do it for the various muted color effects that can give a mood or distinct style.
Unless you're tweaking a lot I doubt the monitor will have too much of an effect.
