Does anyone know how I can add that kind of dark slow gloss type effect they add to films?

Go on an editing program and digitaly grade the film.

The effect you refer to is done by a colourist and is an extremely specialist job involving a lot of experience and some serious hardware.
You'll only get minimal results on any desktop system, particularly if you don't know what you're doing.
I know colourists who can command a huge fee for grading 30 second adverts!
