I need to free up some space from my external hardrive to make way for a new 5min short.

I want to get rif of a vid which has taken up 2.8GB, but simply getting rid of clips dont free up any memory. So how do I get rid of other projects to make way for my new production?

Cheers Cleary.

Final Cut dumps all the files in the scratch directory. The clips you create are tiny files that refer to the actual raw files. Move or delete the scratch directory and you should gain a lot of space.

The following site shows you how to change your scratchdisk. So it has your default scratch disk info as well.

To be honest I don't know where the default is because I reset mine long ago to be on an external drive. That way way I can store/backup the project in it's entirety easily and when I backup my home directory (the scratch is in there somewhere) I'm not backing up a ton of extra files.
