Hi,
I've got approximately 60 minutes of mini-DV to view before I start editing on my flaky DIY editing computer (2+ Ghz, 512 memory, 240 Gb drive).
Here's the first mistake I made using my JVC GYDV700- I didn't "stripe" the tapes to get the timecode. I somehow assumed that the fangled camera would take care of this. Now I want to capture contents of the tapes to VHS for quick review. Any hints or tips on this process, especially with the setup I've got (6.5 and premiere).
Basically I want to access the master mini-DV tapes as little as possible. For example I don't want to constantly review this tape - any hints on avoiding this? Should I burn the entire contents to DVD?
It's a fear of losing the original footage that is preventing me from confidently proceeding with the edit. What a wimp!

With 240GB, why not just capture the whole tape in one go and split it into seperate shots on the PC?
Personally, though, I use my camcorder as an edit deck (with lots of fast forward, rewind and pause) and it's still working fine after five years... the DV mechanism seems to be pretty robust.
Nice one Mark. I'll try and capture the whole thing onto my flaky pooter (built it myself which is a good thing and a bad thing 🙂
cheers
