Im editing a ten minute short right now and i am editing each scene seperately then rendering it off as an uncompressed avi then bringing each finished scene into my "Master" edit where i will then deal with Foley, Sound Design, Credits etc.
Do any of you work this way???....i just find that with so many tiny edits , if i did the whole thing as one file i end up with too many layers and its hard to keep focus!! and track of whats going on.
What stages do you go through and in what order during edit?
Cheers,
Matt!
Maybe you want to looking into 'nesting' your edits. This enables you to put edited sequences into other sequences without exporting them first, can really help reduce brain power and stress levels. But what software are you using?

Each scene is a separate Sequence. I then nest the sequences to create transitions between scenes, foley and overall soundtrack stuff. I use Final Cut Pro.
The advantage of this is you can reedit a scene and the changes are automatically made to the sequences, no re-exporting and re-importing. Also the multiple layers of the original editing are invisible when you are dealing with the nested sequences.

you can do according to your own routine. I'm afraid there is no fix program.
