I'm looking for a new job, probably editing again, and I'm putting together my reel. It's mostly corporate/advertising work, and I had a few questions about it.
- I go directly from a nationally broadcast production to something I shot and directed myself in college on my canon XL1. It's a really fun cut, but I'm afraid that it'll seem unprofessional to include it.
- Is it weird to include both a personal cut and a broadcast cut? I know directors typically (at least in advertising) only include the their cut, but I feel both have merit. And also I'm only 23 so I'm hoping an extra cut of something nationally broadcast will distract from the lack of spots (I've got plenty of videos ?I'm including 4? and films, but only 6 spots)
-My menus are very colorful and fun rather than buttoned up and professional. Will this be a hindrance?
Dave I own a small production company down here, do you have a reel or anything I can look at?

Eh, I know I never thought it was distracting when someone sent in a reel to me and they had personal stuff in there. It was always about the content and style for me. I had to pick people that were right for the jobs I was staffing and that I thought would work well with the producer and director that were on board.
So I guess it really depends on the job you are going for and how strong your personal piece is.
You can always have a head hunter or recruiter that you are not going to send your reel to, look at it and give you suggestions or feedback.
