Hi all.

As a novice I'm trying to teach myself how to shoot better DV and edit it for more interesting results.

I'm trying to avoid panning and zooming because of the jerky results. However I notice that several editing packages allow one to move the "camera" when displaying a still image.

Are there any packages which allow one to do the same thing with video footage? (i.e. that one shoots someone walking across the room in one stationary shot but then digitally zoom to the person and follow them in software giving a steady zoom and pan?)

Most editing programs have effects like that, though they're best avoided if possible: any time you scale the footage you're losing resolution, and it will soon start to look strange compared to the rest of the video.

For smooth panning you probably need a fluid head tripod, for smooth zooming I normally use the remote control on my camera, since the zoom there is on/off at constant speed rather than variable speed.

Good point. That's one of the reasons I would be interested in seeing how it looked.

You say that most editing programs have effects like that. Would that be professional only? Or is there something like that in Avid Xpress, Premiere or even the cheaper variants? I've not seen anything, but perhaps I just don't know what they're called...

Thanks for the advice (esp. re: smooth panning & zooming)

Xpress Pro has something like that and Premiere 6.0 certainly does: I've used it to add a slow zoom in to remove boom mikes in the past.
