If I were to connect my DCR-VX2100, to my iMac G5, through a IEEE 1394 i-link firewire cable, will it work?

The G5 will still pick it up, right? I will still be able to transfer video to it through the firewire?

Sorry, I am not very familiar with Macs. I was just given a G5 by my school's sports association, as payment for all the work I've done on their sports videos. I would really like to get into a Mac, because it has become the industry standard for filmmaking.

Thank you in advance.

When the script writing is done, the work has just begun. When the filming is done, the work has just begun. When post-production is done, the work has just begun. When the distribution is done, you decide if the work is done.

Yes

Yes. That's what the firewire cable is set up to do - transfer DV from your camera to your computer. Even Mac's do this.

The great thing about having the computer and the camera at home is you can try it out on your own time to see if it works.

Just a note, a standard firewire cable may not work as the camera probably has the smaller firewire port (I think it's 4-pin) and requires a special firewire cable.

The firewire was able to tranfer videos from my VX2100 to my HP desktop. One end of the cable had a small plug, and the other side had a larger plug.

Do iMacs have small firewire ports? Or the big ones like on my HP?

iMacs have the larger port, the camera requires the smaller port. If you have the cable to get it into a PC the same cable will work with the iMac.

I believe Apple set the Firewire standards, the cameras matched, and the PC world followed. The thing you have to watch out for is USB2.0 which is good, but not available on all Macs/Cameras. Not that that is a problem in your case.
