Hi guys,

Going to use classical music in my film. Could you please advice if I should be licensing it and how is it done?

Thank you.

If you are using a master version of a classical piece, you will need to find out who owns the master that you plan to use. They are the party that you need to send a master use licensing request form to. This form will let them know the rights you are requesting and other information about your film and how you plan to use the music in your film.

The underlying copyright is most likely in the public domain and there is no licensing fee required. It's important that you verify that this music is in the public domain.

If you have a composer record a new master version and it is in the public domain, you will not have to pay any licensing fees. You will have to consider the composer fee if one is required by the composer and you can afford to pay it. You will also need to be sure to have a composer agreement or work-for-hire agreement outlining how the new composition will be handled, i.e., who will own the rights to this new piece of music.

Post the title of this piece and any other information you have about the recording.
