How would I go about calibrating my NTSC monitor (NOT my computer monitor) so that I could properly color correct my film?

I'm using Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.2.1 and a sony NTSC monitor. I downloaded a color bars picture, imported it into avid and attempted callibrating it via bringin it up on my ntsc monitor but then when I play my film, the black behind the text looks very light and the 16:9 bars on the top and bottom of the screen look light at some parts and dark at others.

How can I calibrate my monitor so that I can color correct on the ntsc monitor and be confident that the color will look as such when I burn it to DVD and play it back on a TV?

I am having the same problem as well. If anyone could find a solution to this, it would help airwalk331 and I both.

When the script writing is done, the work has just begun. When the filming is done, the work has just begun. When post-production is done, the work has just begun. When the distribution is done, you decide if the work is done.

I've never done it so I don't know. I've seen them so I know what you are talking about. Try those links. I think the first 2 look promising.

Thanks a lot, I'm sure those will help a lot (though I don't have time to read them right now).

If anyone has any experience calibrating monitors or has any tips etc. those would still be helpful!

I think the real problem is that most of us either use monitors that other people have calibrated, or color correct on our computers and hope it looks OK on TV :).
