Black and white short film?

Hey guys, i'm new around here and I just wanted to ask a couple of small questions.

I recently bought an HV30 and so far i'm in love with it. I plan on working on a short film very soon. The film (pretty much a music video) will be in black and white, for the most part. What I wanted to know is how would I go about making it black and white? Do I use the B&W setting on my Canon, or is it something I have to do later in editing?

Also, say if I wanted to make a certain object or person in the film in color, while leaving everything else black and white. Sort of like the girl in the red coat from Schindler's List or the film "Pleasantville". How would I do THAT?

And one last thing, I swear. To do any of the previously mentioned stuff, what editing software would you recommend? I only have windows movie maker at the moment, so suggestions (if needed) would be greatly appreciated.

Hey

Your question about shooting in black and white is a simple issue mate, it can be done in the post production stage. So you should shoot your footage in colour as you have more options that way should you descide that it dont look right in black and white.

I dont know too much about the issue of chnging the colour of specific people etc... But I would imagine it to be an issue of layering? But there aqre more technical people than myself on the forum who can tell you more about that.

If you want one color to stick out you have to be very carefully that it is only in the places that you need when you film. Then in post use a secondary color corrector (there are lots on the net for whatever NLE/effects program your using, some are even free).

I would recommend Final Cut pro to cut on. If you're strapped for cash and/or only have a PC, you might go with Vegas.

To get the effect you're looking for you'll want to shoot in color. This leaves you in a much more powerful position in post. To get black and white simply desaturate your video. To get one object in color, create a copy of your video as a second layer. Desaturate the lower video and mask the object you want in color on the top layer.

Color converted to black and white does not look the same as regular black and white. The color picks up far more grades of gray. Do a couple of tests shots to make sure which one gives you the look you want.

Is better to work in color, and in lately in post-production do the black and white; 'cause in this form, you can first work with each color, and do a correction too; and then desaturate all.
In the other way, you can't do much with the color, and you can only work with the brightness and contrast.
good luck

ah and i think Avid is a good program. you've to do a mask, like in photoshop, and then the person will have color. you can download a tutorial to do this. is not too dificult
