What is the best way to fake widescreen with a VX2100? Should I shoot in widescreen (Not true) Or should I fake it in Post production?

Also: If I have to fake it in post-production, what is the best way to do it.

I know I am going to loose some quality, but what is the best way to loose the least amount of quality?

When the script writing is done, the work has just begun. When the filming is done, the work has just begun. When post-production is done, the work has just begun. When the distribution is done, you decide if the work is done.

Most people will advise to do it in post, as it gives you more options. Just be sure to shoot it with letterboxing in mind if that's how you plan to do it. I myself prefer it.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Yeah, basically. In the worst case, it's unlikely to look any worse than the digital scaling in the camera.

I just bought Instant HD from Red Giant, and I plan to do the scaling in there.

Has anyone used the plug-in, and does it actually look good?

I know I just can't get good quality just from a plug in, but I'm really actually after cheap widescreen.

So any feedback on the plugin would be nice.

Thanks.

what is it you are after?
HD resolution (1920x1080) or (as I assume from your question) the image aspect ratio of widescreen (black bars on top and bottom)

HD resolution is done by upscaling pal/ntsc video or downscaling 2k,4k etc film resolutions

if you just want to fake widescreen simply cut off the top and bottom of your frame by blending black bars on your image.
(a targa image with an alpha channel) should to the trick

while shooting you should keep those areas in mind.
on set when shooting full apperture film they used to duct tape a monitors top and bottom. if you use a camera with an lcd screen you can do the same....it is silly but it works....(mind you this is only for your visual feedback and obviously will not be recorded!)
