if i bought avid xpress dv and use it with IEEE1394 would it work fine?

I'm not sure exactly which Firewire chipsets Avid software supports, but Xpress Pro HD does work with both the on-board Firewire and Audigy 2 Firewire ports on my PC. So any recent card or motherboard will probably be OK.
For total safety, though, you'd have to buy an officially supported system.
