This may sound like a stupid question but how can you import shots and clips into Avid FreeDV to edit them. It seems impossible!

I don't think that Free DV supports importing files: I think you can only capture from Firewire.
That's one of the limitations they put in to stop people using it for 'real' projects. It's fine for doing basic DV cuts but once you start wanting to do anything complicated you have to buy the real thing.
