im gonna buy a new computer but i need to know which is better to edit my movies on...apple or windows??? the only other thing i wil use the computer for is writing papers and the internet. I have never owned a mac so i woldnt be to used to them. However i have only edited using final cut. So should i buy a mac and get used to it or buy a pc and learn how to use a new editing software???

If you know and like Final Cut then go with Apple.

I suspect this discussion will go the way it always goes: the Apple users who love the Mac will suggest Apple and FCP, the PC users who love their Dell's will suggest Premiere.

I have only used FCP so I have no way to compare but I say go with the Mac.

This thread is the making of a never ending pointless debate over people's personal tastes.

Both can serve your purposes well. Go with whichever you feel more comfortable with, and whichever best meets your price point for what you'll be expecting the machine to do.

If you're primiarliy going to be using your new computer for video editing, then I would say go with a mac and get final cut pro (you can always get avid for it later if you need/want it). But if you do other things like Quicken for your taxes, word, outlook express for email etc. and film editing isn't happening on it all the time (and also if you like playing games on it) then go PC.

That's the best advice I can give you. I have a PC notebook which I edit on now, but I think the next computer I get will be a Mac G5 in a couple years.

Airwalk331, in a couple of years you'll be able to buy a Mac with an intel chip so you can dual boot and get both options. By then the G5 will barely be supported and probably looking like a snail (but cheap).

In a couple of years ever computer being sold today will run like a snail. My "blazingly fast" 1GHz processor of 6 months ago is a snail today.

If Price Doesn't Matter, AVid Xpress Pro is a great editing program. It is what I use on my Dell and i love it. If you buy it though, make sure you know someone who can help you learn it or order software that teaches you. It has a steep learning curve but once you learn it, you can do absolutely amazing editing.

Out of those two...Adobe premiere Pro. I hear it is very user friendly and a good way to start.

Again, it's a question of tastes. Really, the basic "timeline" concept is shared by all higher-end editing systems - premiere, FCP, avid, Media100, etc. I use FCP because I intern at a local TV station and that's what they use there, so I know it well. Also, this may just be me and I haven't used Premiere in ages, I see FCP as being a lot more fully-featured than Premiere, and perhaps even more user-friendly.

That's what I did--started out in Premiere 5 and then switched to Mac for a more fully-featured editing suite (this was when the only viable high-end suite for PC was? ugh? Avid? Premiere has come a long way since then but I haven't really kept up with it).

WARNING: Buying a Mac WILL turn you into a snob. I can barely TOUCH a Windows machine anymore and all my friends resent me for being arrogant about my uptime, virus susceptibility, crash frequency, etc., but I figure it's worth it because I actually enjoy using my computer now.
