It doesn't typically happen. There aren't really any 'big name' editors, just New York editors and LA editors with beefed up reels. So it's not like you can use your editor clout to direct stuff. The thing is, directors deal with editing, but editors rarely deal with production.

A much better way to break into directing is being a DA or PA.
