Hey everyone,

How do I remove characters/props from scenes ... for example ... I have a scene where a little girl is on a swingset ... I'd like to remove the swing from the scene so that she is just riding on air ... or another example I'd like to completely remove her from the scene.

Is this alot of work ?

Yes.

If you just want to remove something that doesn't interact with the rest of the frame it's not such a big deal, but removing a swing would be hard since it would probably cover parts of the girl and somehow you'd have to replace those. Removing the girl would be even harder since you wouldn't see the swing while she was sitting on it so you'd need to completely replace the swing with CG or whatever.

well, you could use masking and shoot an empty shot of the background with out the swing. Of course that includes hours of frame by frame masking with many, many points. It would be even harder if the camera was moving cause then you would probably have to track the motion and repeat it with the blank plate. Its doable but hard if your new to it.

I can't go back and shoot ... If I have rough footage where my actors enter in and out of the still frame ... would I be able to use those as backgrounds ? ... then just remove the actor ?

Alright thats a link to some example still frames I pulled ... Can I use the sections of video where the girl is not in the swing as a background to layer/mask with ?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

As with all these effect shots, it's all in the planning and execution at the time of the shoot. It's better to spend 6 hours lighting a blue screen for example than 36 hours trying to get rid of creases, shadows, bleed and uneven light artefacts.
