I am currently a sophomore at a community college. I am transferring to a four year university this fall and will get a degree in communication studies and I plan on going into the electronic media production option. At this school, they use adobe premiere pro. Currently I am stuck with Final Cut Express. I was going to upgrade to the pro version, but they came out with Final Cut Pro X and I hear it is not a professional program. I have been hearing a lot about Adobe Premiere Pro and right now until the 4th, Adobe is selling Adobe Production Premium for $450 (regular $1700) at a student discount. I have the money to purchase this, but is it a good buy? Should I find a version of Final Cut Pro 7 on ebay or something, wait for Final Cut Pro X to shape up, or go with this amazing deal?
I can't speak for Final Cut, but I can say I've always used Adobe Premiere Pro and it's served me well 😀 It's certainly very competent, if that's what you're asking. You may want to wait for someone who's used both, but that's just my two cents.

Apple is fixing a lot of the problems with X.
I'm going to say what you don't want to hear - both are excellent
and you will be happy no matter which you choose. I have always
used FCP - but that doesn't mean YOU should use it. My choice
would be to buy FCP Studio 2.

The Adobe Production suite is good to invest in, especially if you get the student production suite which has Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Affects, and Adobe Premiere which is an excellent video editor program! Every film-maker, video producer, needs these programs!!!!
Adobe Photoshop is a staple amongst video makers and it works seamless with Adobe Premiere!

If you're a college student, you should be elegible for Adobe's student discount. I got the entire master collection for under $700. It's really an amazing deal.
Final Cut Pro X is $300. Even with Compressor and Motion, it is still only $400. The last three updates brought in massive amount of new features, and they were free to all current users.
The way Apple keeps updating this software, you'll likely get far more of your money's worth buying FCP then anything from Adobe. When Adobe updates software with new features, you must pay for the update, and that usually costs more than the full version of FCP. Apple seems to want to charge for an update only when they upgrade their software to a major new version. Meanwhile, they bring in dozens upon dozens of new features, even while calling them incrementa ("dot") updates.
I have used both, and at this point, I would pick FCP over Premiere any time.
