What would the best method of performing this feat be?
I'm pretty new to After Effects, but I'm not a stranger to frames/keyframes, and the likes. Compositions and the strange idea of masks that AA has are pretty new to me, so try to dumb it down as much as you can.
Anyone know how I can perform this? I just want to pump my brain full of as much useful information as I can.
Thanks!
Im unfamiliar with after effects my self. What is it? stuff like different transitions and special effects? Cleary.

easy way to do person flying without using after effects is, stop motion, jump in the air, taje a pic, step forward then jump in the air again at the same height, then repeat this. This is difficult to do, you could also try green screening, or blue. Adobe after effects is a good program used to perform effects on a video "after" it is made.

That's not quite what I'm trying to do. This is going to be hard explaining it, as it's more of a visual thing, than something you can imagine, but my current plans are that the actor jumps up into the air, and flies vertically up, away into the clouds. Including getting smaller as he goes up.
I've never experimented with trying to make said effect, but I assumed green-screening would be the best way to do it... Any ideas?
EDIT: and yes, After Effects, as you can tell from the name, a post-production editing utility. It's used to make some pretty need special effects, without the need for things like Maya.
greenscreening is probably your best bet then, look up some tutorials on GOOGLE or summat on how to do it on a low budget without proffesionals.

If not greenscreen you're talking about renting a crane and cabling up your actor which could be expensive and risky.
Another option is to use a dummy and drop it feet first from great height and play the clip backwards. If you hide the landing/takeoff (say behind a crowd of onlookers or with cuts) it might look alright. I would suspend the dummy from some strong fishing cord (which would be invisible) strung up between two buildings or something. Release the string from one building and the dummy falls.

Be aware that if they have a cape it won't work right. You'll have to slingshot them up in that case.

Unless of course you tie the cape to the dummy's body at certain intervals with certain lengths of fishing line. It would flutter and move with the force of the air, but if played in reverse that would still look realistic as long as it stayed close enough to the body. That would probably screw up aerodynamics though.

From the sounds if it, greenscreening would be the easiest method.
Cheers!
