Hi everyone!
This is my first time posting on this end of the forum. I am new to the whole world of filming, and I am asking questions and trying to get everything prepared. My partners and I are currently preparing to make a few low budget short films in order to make a portfolio to show to future investors. We are trying our hardest to cut corners where needed, but the editing seems to be the part we get stuck on. We are shooting the films on an 8mm camcorder (not sure what name-brand, but can find out if necessary). With advice given in an article written by director Robert Rodriguez, we plan to transfer it to a VHS (which one of us already knows how to do). My question is, how do we edit it before transferring it to VHS? Is it better to transfer it to DVD instead? What equipment/software would we need? Is it best to TRY and find an editor willing to do this for us for a very low fee (or perhaps even someone willing to do it from the kindness of their heart)? Please help! Thanks in advance! ?:D?

MarkG,
I will have to check that out. My partner who owns the cam is out of town until some time tomorrow. Keep checking this topic for a reponse from me and I will get back to you.

Well, first he said it was a Hi-8 camera. Then he said it might be digital. ?:(!? Maybe you could just tell me which types of softwares/equipment would be good with both types of 8mm camera's. Once I get a chance to really look at it, I should be able to find out exactly what it is. Thanks in advance!

Well, for Digital-8 you'll have a Firewire output you can connect to a Firewire card on your PC. If it's video-8 or Hi8, you'll need an analog capture card to get the footage into your computer... I have a Pinnacle Pro-One card in my PC which captures analog footage to DV format, but it's not terribly reliable (in fact lately I've been recording analog to DV tapes on my camcorder and capturing from there by Firewire).

As for the final video, even if you start with basic video-8 footage, the edited footage will still look better on DVD than VHS.

Note that Digital-8 records DV format on Hi8 tapes, so maybe that's where the confusion comes from.
