Hi,
I have been into Music since before I can remember and have been involved with several bands (the most successful being my current band "Morbius"), apart from writing and playing music I also have a vociferous appetite for it and have subsequently built up a lot of knowledge and a music collection of thousands of records on vinyl and CD's covering every genre you care to mention. I am in regular demand for providing "compilations" for friends and friends of friends who wish to expand their musical knowledge. I am also a big fan of movies (again covering many genres) and the use of music in movies is something that interests me greatly. My band Morbius has had many tracks used to soundtrack various DVD's and TV programmes but this post is not to plug my band as available to write soundtracks (although that is something we are very open to discussing). I am offering my services as a music consultant, if you have a film, a short, an ad, anything, but just can't think of the right track(s) to use then give me a shot.....I walk through life with a constant soundtrack running in my head....
I've no experience of doing this, but I KNOW that I'd be good at it...this would be a free service so you've nothing to lose (apart from getting the rights to use the music, that is another area that I would want to help with).
This would be one of my dream jobs...I'm now in my mid 30's and figure I'd give it a shot...I've no idea how you actually get the job of choosing music for movies, etc. so I thought a post here (and a few other places) would be a good way to start...
Have a look at my bands website for a bit more info about me:

Hi Mark. Welcome to filmmaking.net.
We ask that you don't double post - so I removed one of your posts.
I currently have a scene that takes place in a bar. There's a jukebox in the back ground. I've got about 22 minutes to fill with source music.
The two problems I'm having are finding the right songs that will compliment the scene while not drawing attention (the story, after all, is important here) and getting the rights to 5 or 6 songs.
Can you help?

Hi,
Sorry about the cross posting, obviously got off to a bad start ?:I?
I'd love to help...I need more info though...what type of bar? what are the other patrons doing? what is the mood of the piece? daytime/nightime? 22 minutes seems a long time for a single scene, does the movie consist entirely of this scene? What is going on during the course of the 22 mins? a script or copy of the material would be very useful.
With regards to obtaining the rights, I have no experience of this but would be willing to learn/help. Is your film a "student" production? it appears that significant discounts are available for these types of productions. The important thing seems to be who controls the publishing rights to the tracks you need to use...
Hope I can help.
Mark

Not a bad start at all. It's been fixed and is all good.

The bar is in a bowling alley - but not open to the public. It's where the character meet to discuss business. No one else in there.

Mood? I don't know. Never really thought about defining the mood of the scene. Nighttime (11:10 to be exact).

It is long. One of the reasons I want to add some source music. It's the entire first act, all in one StediCam shot. The set up to a heist story. Friendly banter at first, business talk, some animosity, outright hostility when an outsider and his bodyguard show up, a fight, lot's of talk and business negotiating.
I could send you a copy of the scene if you think it would help.

Yep. I'm well aware about what rights I need to get - just don't have the money to buy rights to that many songs. I'm really going to have to go to new, unsigned bands who could use the exposure. Not that the exposure will be that great. I don't have a distribution deal and it's really background, source music I'm looking for.
Makes it really hard.

Hi,
Not sure I can help, I do not have access to lots of tracks by unsigned bands. Your best bet is to post on one of the many unsigned acts websites (peoplesound, vitaminic, and lots of others) I'm sure there would be plenty of bands willing to let you use their material for free...I will happily provide you with one track from my band Morbius...what year is the film set? My offer was more along the lines of suggesting commercially available music that would suit, but I understand the cost implications.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I wouldnt mind talking to you about the soundtrack to a production I'm planning if it's not inconvienient, I have a few ideas but could do with another opinion on selecting tracks, if you have MSN or AIM or something and could spare me a few minutes of your time it would be much appreciated.
Regards,
