Hi. I'm curious as to how do professional filmmakers make you feel like your getting closer to an actor that is quite far away from you. Say you have a scene were your filming an actor looking out a window, and the camera is set up in another building at an equal elevation across from the window. How would you go about filming this scene to make you feel like your zooming in on them? I can't imagine that they use a zoom feature on the camera. Since I have no experience really making movies and am just using the standard family camera I don't really know if professional camera's zooms work really well compared to cheap cameras which seem to go out of focus for a few seconds when zooming in unless you go real slow.
Most of the time a shot like that will be done using a crane.

Sometimes a zoom lens will be used. However, there is a huge difference between a professional zoom lens that costs $30,000 and the zoom lens on a video camera that uses auto focus.

One way is just zoom, and then edit the zoom out in post. Doing this will create a long shot to closeup jump. Add emphasis with sound if you want and worry about the next shot.
Another way to do it, a in which Hollywood probably does it, is to set up a dolly track for some distance behind the first person so you can move the dolly and get closer and closer to the guy in the far window without actually adjusting the zoom on the camera. Problem with this is you might need a good deal of track to make it work if the buildings are far apart. Might work better from a roof or something.
