I'm an aspiring filmmmaker and the only thing I got under my belt is the love for movies an I used to edit and shoot skate videos....I'm trying shoot, write, direct, edit, everything, my own film by next year (june 08) with a wal-mart JVC MiniDV camera....is that retarded or reasonable for someone who cant afford a crazy expensive cam....also... I was wondering what any other filmmakers on here use (cams, editing software, w/e) and what's the best.....I'll most likely have more questions later, but thats it for now...

As for software, I use Sony Vegas 7.0e. You can download a trial version of this program off of Sony's website. The camera I use is a Sony MiniDVD DCR-DVD505. It works wonderfully for me right now.

As for making a movie by next year, you should try to do more then 1 film by next year. Even if they are not that great, the more experience the better. Make 2-3 (atleast) short films and practice around.

I love Vegas, works better for my on my PC than more expensive Adobe or Avid.

Linux, the choice of a GNU generation.

I use Final Cut Pro to edit. I shoot with a Sony VX2100 in a homemade widescreen technique that works pretty good(I'm suprised I couldn't find any information about it on the web, I doubt I'm the only one who uses the technique).

A camcorder for an aspiring filmmaker at a low price could be the PV-GS500. It's pretty good.

Also, for a PC, Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegs are excellent programs for editing.

Edit Studio by Puremotion is worth checking out.

My choice of camera, lit for a filmy look is the Sony PD 170.

This was shot on the 170 and edited in edit studio. Additional audio work was done in Sony's SoundForge.
