I was in film school a decade ago and am again getting serious about getting into film making. I recall a professor stressing how important it was to register any script you write with the WGA to protect yourself from having your work stolen without due credit or compensation. Just a quick, perhaps stupid question then... has that been affected at all by the writer's strike? Would registering a script with the WGA cause any issues in getting a script produced, assuming it was produced independently?

Well if anyone had the same question, registering a script does not make you a member of the guild... so register those scripts...

The last bit of your question is a good one. "Would registering a script with the WGA cause any issues in getting a script produced, assuming it was produced independently?"
I think as long as it's not a script written at the behest of a producer you should be fine. I'm hoping someone else has an answer or opinion though.

The registration process has nothing to do with the strike.
Non guild members can still register scripts. Non guild
members can still have their scripts produced by non
signatory producers.
