hey I've been wondering about something for some time now, if you don't record the sound separetly and can you still edit it? like if you were to record the sound and picture together with the camera.

To be honest, I'd record sound on the camera if at all possible. With DV it's easy, because the sound and picture are both stored digitally so with a Firewire card you can capture both at the same time. With analogue video formats it's a bit more complex as you need to capture analogue audio and analogue video and make sure they sync up: something like an old DC30+ card can do that without any problems, but if you have to capture the video with one card and the audio through a normal PC sound card, they can get out of sync over time.

Analogue sound on a format like Hi8 may not be quite as good as DAT or Minidisk, but the quality isn't _that_ bad. There are Hi8 cameras with digital sound, but there are few decks left that can play it back!
