For NLE I would recommend Sonic Foundry Vegas to anyone in the editing busines. It's cheaper, it's faster and its much easier than all the other editing programs on the market. It can take up to hours mo make a simple editing in Premier, on Vegas the same result can be achieved in less than 10 minutes. It's Preview screen works smoothly, and even after adding many effects you can still preview the result with at least 10-15 fps on a regular computer.
I've been checking out the different software that college's use, and i havent seen one college yet thats uses Vegas. I would stick with Avid and Premeire
That's just another evidence of the incredibe software monopoly on the market. Adobe has some very nice products, but none of them are very user friendly. But OK, you get used to it. But then it's the slowness. It's a torture to preview even a simple AVI file. When you add one simple effect, its wants to render it before doing any preview task. In Vegas you put 10 different effects on a AVI, and you can still preview it rather smoothly. It Premier it takes at least an hour to arrange a two-column rolling text. In Vegas you get the same result in less than five minutes.
One of the reasons Vegas is not very popular yet, is that Sonic Foundry is rather new in the video industry. Their audio softwares have been used by musicians worldwide for many years; and I know for a fact that in the music industry you get the same results out from a Sonic Foundry system and an AVID system. It's all just about a wildly capitalistic marketing policy. When people believe Adobe, Avid, etc. are the only products worth using, no one even bothers to try out other products. But I would recommend you to download Vegas, just to compare it with the other NLE softwares.
Then what about Avid compared to vegas?
if the ap is available for download then please post the link.

Vegas Video 3 lets you use your NTSC or PAL monitor to preview real time effects. By comparison, if you switch to real time mode in AVID Xpress DV, your monitor is off-limits unless you're passing video through S-Video on a graphics card. It's true that the new AVID Xpress is a huge step forwards for AVID, but still it's way behind the other products. Unless you buy a professional AVID product, inc. the system requiered, (which amounts up to $100.000) AVID is, I believe, not worth buying. Here is a small comparison...
