Where do I start?

I beleive I am much older than most here, but I have a few questions for just starting out.
I am planning on putting together a story-script-trailer-film in the next coming year(s). Once I get a good story down and a small script and make a few scenes, should I do a trailer first to help sell my idea. I think this will show how good the quality and and style and idea of the film is. If this is the correct route, then how do I sell the idea to someone to help film my idea, and do I need to take the trailer to a festival, film school, filmamker? This is all so much!!! ?:D?
Lastly. I am in my second year at school for computer animation and film special effects. But I beleive my true path lies in directing films. Should I stay and finish what I have started and then go to film school, or try and transfer to a film school and learn my chosen path.
All help is appreciated. BTW - I am 27 if you were wondering. ?:p?

So you're 27 and 'older' than people here? I got 10 years on ya...

There's so much to say here, so I'll keep it simple for now.

What school and what software are you learning? Keep in mind you need to pay your bills. Filmmakers generally do not make enough money coming out of the shoot to live on. If you have computer skills that are marketable keep it up. You can always sell your services to other filmmakers.

Experience, experience, experience - that's how you learn the film biz. Film school is cool, you learn a lot and hopefully get to actually make short films, but the biggest asset would be the connections with other who share your film making vision. Try to find local indie filmmakers and volunteer to do anything just to get on the set. With every shoot you'll learn something new PLUS again you meet folk who share the film making vision. You chose where to spend your time. Barnes & Noble has film books ya know.

As for steps... well you should know your story. You should also have the script flushed out as well. A good script seems to help get a film made. Film making is a team sport so you may want to get somene experienced to produce it or co-produce it with you. There are 2 stages in teh selling. First is to get the money to make the movie (you'll probably have to pay it back; keep that in mind). The second is after the film is done you'll want some type of distribution (theatrical, cable, blockbuster, amazon...). You may want to try and make a film, any film, before making a trailer or entering it into festivals. Festivals are for completed films seeking publicity and distribution. I suggest hearding out and getting a film makers book and read on through. That's probably your best first step. Email me if I didn't make sense (sometime the typing doesn't keep up with the thoughts) or you have some specific questions. Or better yet just post here since others may have input.
