Hi,

I'm 19 years old and I live in Malaysia. I'm currently studying Animation in college and have been thinking that this may not be what I really want to do. I've been looking around for film schools and in Malaysia there's only one. I just saw the work of the students and I must admit, I don't now much about film making but I really don't think these are good, well at least not good enough to win an award. Here's a link to the 3 short films 2 students of that film school did that won an award, let me know what you think ok?

Anyway since there's only one college here, and it's not very good, I was thinking of going to the states to study in a good film school. I was wondering if you could help and tell me which are the best? Since I don't live in America, it wouldn't really matter where the college is as you know, it'll be the same anyway, I'de still have to move. Which schools do the best known directors come from?

What I really want to do is still animation, but rather than make it, I would like to know how to direct and produce it. That's what I really want to do. To know about camera angles, scripts, directing, in short I'de like to be the person that arranges everything and puts the whole thing together. It's not a control or being in charge thing. It's just that I kinda want to be behind the story, to you know, sorta have control over the movie/series. I want it to turn out the way I want to, to have the audience see the story through my eyes.

I guess that's pretty much enough of babbling lol. Anyway, please help if you can. If you don't know which one's are the best, maybe you can tell me about the colleges your in? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Im shooting for UCLA.

From what people tell me, they think I have a shot.

But there's UCLA, USC, AFI, and many others that I'm too lazy to name.

I'm starting to look at colleges and was wondering if anybody has heard anything about Emerson College in Boston (USA)? It looks like a great school for film etc. Also this summer i will probably be going to a 2 week "camp" for film etc. called "The Workshops"? (www.theworkshops.com it's in Rockport, Maine USA). Has anyone heard of either of them? Please let me know. -dean

Hey Dean,
I have heard Emerson is pretty good. I actually go to the workshops you are going to. They have a college too, not just workshops. Its really pretty cool. The college is called Rockport College and you can find info about it at, http://rockportcollege.edu, then click AA degree program. Right now its only a 2 year school but in a year or so they should have a whole 4 years available. I have a couple TA's from Emerson and they both say that this school (the one I am in now) is really great.

Dean, if you really arent too sure I would say to do the young film makers program. You will probably wind up acting in others films anyway so you will get both out of that program. You will probably really like it. There are so many people to meet and make connections with. You can also ask while you are there about emerson college or whatever else while you are there. write these names down, Marin and Megan in post. They are both people that will probably be there this summer and went to Emerson for film.
Best of luck to you,

Thanks a lot! Have you ever been to any of The Workshops? Just wondering, because the catalogue i recieved told me that the young film makers, works with the young film actors. I wanted to know if i could both act in and participate in the production of a film there this summer at a camp? -dean

I havent done the workshops, just the college. I would think if you told them you are interested in both that they would probably let you act in a couple too then. You will be busy doing the young film makers course though so who knows how much extra time to act you will have. I would suggest calling and asking about that. They should be able to let you know if you would have some time to do the acting too. Sometimes you just never know though and have to try it to find out. If you have a strong passion for acting though and just arent sure about production then maybe try the acting one. I just dont know how well known it is for acting so I would assume there would be more production people then acting people there. All the other workshops are production of some sort. They do have local area actors that sometimes come to act for free so sometimes thats where they get some of the actors.

Best of luck to you,
