What's up, I'm new to the forum, I am attending San francisco st. next fall to major in film production. I was just wondering if anybody had some insight as to what is the best computer(preferably laptop and cheap) for filmmaking?

I'm a PC guy, I love PCs and would never ever go MAC. I just took great classes at Rockport College in Maine. Everyone there used Macs (G4 desktops) which sucked for me. There were a couple of IBM Workstations that work fine and the Dell 340 and 360 Workstations work well also (Those are desktops). The only laptops I saw up there that people were editing on were the Mac G4 laptops. I'd say get a G5 laptop if its out otherwise get a G4 laptop. Cause a PC laptop will hafta be decked out and will cost more (infortunately). Anythink else I can help with? I hope i helped you. -Dean

You might want to read the FAQ on this very issue too...

Expect to pay $1800+ for your computer, man. (You'll be using it for four years) Haven't you edited any kind of video you've done at home? What kind of computer was that? Anyway, the software, whether it be Avid or Final Cut Pro have High Specs for the computer they run on. You're gonna need one beast of a computer. The disadvantage to having a laptop instead of a desktop is that you're ram is restricted as a laptop is only so big. Same thing with the hard drive but you can buy external hard drives. good luck -dean
