When A director gets on set, it is imparitivie that he/she knows how all the lighting works, how exactly the camera is supposed to be set up and work, and all that really technical stuff.
Or can he/she just get away with knowing th ecore basics of lightign etc...

It depends upon your Director of Photography. Often on independent films they might be the same guy, in which case you have to know it.
