I had recentlty posted a question as to the length a wedding video should be. I am now wondering what i should charge for shooting one and is it based on legth, or if not length what other factors. The person i had talked to from church said he chraged $400 for the weeding and $200 for the reception, but went on to say it was less than what he could charge. But anyways what your take on this. Any feedback to this or my prior question would be greatly appreciated.

You should charge by the hour. Of your time - not the final product.

How many hours are you required to be taping? Reception, too?
How many hours digitizing?
How many hours editing?
How many hours mixing the sound?
How many hours preparing the DVD or tape?

Then decide how much you think you are worth per hour.

The cost of the Wedding Video is more a marketing thing than just an amount of labour times hours. It varies from market to market, and also within each market. Best bet - check with local pro-videographers, it'll give you an idea.

I would suggest calling around as if you were having a wedding, getting the prices, working from there.

I would also suggest cutting your prices a lot for the first two or three weddings. Admitting to these first few that you are just starting and that's why they are getting the cheaper rate. Hopefully they will be more tolerant that way if you have issues or screwups or if the editing takes longer than expected.

Once you've done that you've got a showreal and hopefully a positive review or two and can really start to consider your prices.
