I'm looking to buy a camera - something I can work on a few little projects with. I'd probably like to get the best camera I can between $1500-2000.

I don't know a ton about cameras but I've used to Canon XL1 a couple times and was pretty happy with it. And I know the XL2 has been out for a while. The Panasonic DVX-100 seems popular as well (dunno the difference between A and B though).

I'd really like some advice on a good camera to go with (3 chip mini dv is probably what im looking at), trying to get the most bang for my buck.

I might try to find something used but I'm wondering what to look for when buying used:

- guessing hours used are important, sort of like mileage on a car. I dont know if there is a way to find out how much a camera has been used or if I just have to go by what a person tells me.

- lenses. i wonder if single lensed cameras will really hold me back. what kind of lenses should i try to get? (i know these are noob questions)

- any other suggestions on good camera models would be helpful

- other important factors to take into account when buying a used camera. questions to ask the owner, etc.

THANKS!!!

Anybody...Anybody?....
Well hello! I hate to take the Moderators Job, but:
WELCOME TO FILMMAKING.NET FORUMS!

My best advice would be go with what you know. I have no idea what kind of work you are doing, whether professional or personal, but stay within the caliber. Don't break the bank buying a 3,000$ camera when a simple 900$ one will suffice.

And depending on how much experience you have, the len may or may not make a difference. The best case scenario would be to go with a lense that can self adjust and allow you to adjust as well. That way as your skill grows, you can branch out from auto-focus and whatnot.

But you are probably getting a strange sort of response. I'm shooting Super/Digital 8mm and love it. But to each his own I guess.

Cheers lad. Or miss. Or whatever ye may be.

That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough! I'm going to clown college!

DVX-100 is fantastic for the money. You can't go wrong.
