What are your humble opinons on this most recent trend of turning video games into movies?
Halo
Doom
Potentially World of Warcraft
Final Fantasy

Personally I think its, for lack of a better term, retarded and childish. I feel it is sad when we get our kicks out of movies based on video games. I mean really, can you get any more strange then that? Its just a bizzare concept.

Thoughts anyone?

It is kind of sad that some filmmakers in Hollywood cannot figure out ideas for movies, and use video games.

Maybe only 1 or 2 games, would be acceptable as movies. i think it is a little bit childish as well.

The problem is not that they are games turned into movies, but that the filmmakers just think that's all they need and feel they can skip characterization, plot, and depth.

Personally I liked Resident Evil and heard good things about Silent Hill.

I liked Resident Evil as well, but Silent Hill, not so much. I dunno, there was just something to it that didn't seem scary.

I totally agree RJ
For the most part its like watching someone play a video game, which I can do without paying for it.

Though I will confess I liked Resident Evil. Guilty pleasure.
Silent hill
ugh
I would rather sit at home and throw my own shit at the wall then ever watch that movie again.

There is one aspect of this business that sometimes filmmakers who don't make movies for a living either forget, or simply dismiss:

This is a business. First and foremost

Not that filmmaking can't be an art, but first it's a business. Of course it isn't business first to people who don't earn their living at it - they are free to make all their decisions based only on their artistic judgment.

Those in "Hollywood" who you believe cannot figure out ideas for movies must make some business decisions. Many, many people want to see video games made into movies. There is also the instant name recognition that makes marketing easier to consider.

Maybe those filmmaker in "Hollywood" are gambling their money on a product they believe might make money rather than not being able to come up with ideas for movies.

Even you, Director985 think 1 or 2 would be acceptable. Don't forget that "Hollywood" isn't one person - the business of making movies is comprised of many different individuals each making decisions and choices on their own. If ten different filmmakers feel the way you do, and each of the ten have a different 1 or 2 acceptable games in mind then 10 to 20 get made. And if even a few of them are successful financially, then more will be made.

And it seems that even though two of you didn't like one of them, the filmmaker got you to see it. And as long as people see them, these kinds of movies will continue to be made.

I don't think it's a bad idea to make a movie based on a video game. Like certified said, it's a business first. If you take a popular game and turn it into a movie, chances are, anyone who has played and enjoyed that game is going to want to see that movie. Unfortunatly many attempts at this have resulted in tragedy.

"Alone in the Dark"... a horrible movie!
"Final Fantasy"... I'm still waiting for a similarity to the game other than the title.
"Silent Hill"... came close to being tolerable. I'll give it that much.
"Doom"... (drops head and sighs)
"Super Mario Brothers"... WHAT!? WHY!?
"Resident Evil"... Thank you! This one is a keeper. The sequel was good too.

These are just my opinions. They could all be great movies and I can't wait to make one that will be criticized by millions.

Well said Certified Instigator. Sorry if I mislead some people here.

Personally, I think that is the entire problem with the film industry nowadays. Its far to business oriented. Nothing comes out which we haven't seen in 20 trillion different manifestations already. Its like a sick and twisted buddha. I feel film is an artform and, like any art, very human way of making life possible, not as a business. I feel we need to be more creative and march to our own drum as opposed to marching to societies and turning out what they want.

This is probably why I'm a broke bohemian.

The same argument against Video Game movies (Can't they think of their OWN ideas? Why just make movies based on games?) could be directly translated to Novels and Plays.

Why on earth would they make a movie about Mario Puzo's "The Godfather"? Or Charles Webb's "The Graduate"? Or Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club"? Can't they come up with their own ideas for movies?

But of course no one's about to make that argument, are they?

Granted, I haven't seen a Video Game Movie anywhere near as good as either of those, somehow I don't think ALL films based on novels or plays are amazing.

Can I just ask why all the love for Resident Evil, and even more shocking - its sequel? They were absolutely terrible translations of the source material, packed with nonsensical plot and character motivations, awful acting and dialogue, and just generally very bad films.

There have been a run of absolutely terrible VGMs - Street Fighter, and the second Mortal Kombat to add to the list here already. But honestly I don't think it's "childish" or particularly uncreative to want to make one. I just think it's going to take a few years for there to be a truly good formula created. Clearly games are evolving and becoming more cinematic, and this only lends itself further to the cause.

So far (apart from the original Mortal Kombat where the designers worked on the movie and came out with a good plot) VGs have had crap all to work with story-wise. I can't imagine how they're going to make Halo worth watching. The game is nothing but a bunch of faceless soldiers fighting aliens - as far as I'm concerned it's Space Invaders 3D. The way all the characters are, you might as well make the whole thing in CGI... and while you're at it, why not make it interactive and chuck it on Xbox? Hmm.

Recently we've seen The Godfather hit a successful trifecta - great novel, great movie, and now great game. I don't think it's far fetched to imagine that we could see a game like Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem become a very good motion picture.

It was a zombie movie and I never played the game.

Wow. The street fighter movie was so bad that eveybody forgot to add it to the list of bad VGMs till now. That's sad. I can barely remember it and somehow I know I don't want to. I'm glad Resident Evil didn't follow the exact storyline as the game. It became a zombie movie based one the game instead of the game being made into a movie.

The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.
