I'm in the works of making my first short film. It's going to be a doc and I have found some great music I want to use. But how does one go about making sure that they won't get sued for using someone else's music?

Contact the people who own the rights to the music and get permission (which generally involves paying them money).

If that doesn't work out for you, you can get royalty free music. Here is a good source,

Another option is to find a composer who can create similar music from scratch: they may well want money to do so, but odds are it will be cheaper than buying the rights to any kind of popular music.

That Freeplay website charges you for music. And on the asking an agency for permission i tried it with 2 famous artists and they never replied. I think they are rude myself

have a good look through myspace to listen to smaller bands - might find something.
