I'm an advocate for filmmaking on a budget. I've almost become known as "The low to no budget filmmaker".

Don't worry about the type of camera you have. If it's what you can afford, use it.

quote:

To save money, a flashlight taped to the handle of a white or silver umbrella works for soft lighting.

But now, it's about time I stepped up my game. I guess it would be silly to ask what camera to buy. every few days there is a new post asking that so I'm going to take a different approach. I'm going to test out a few different cameras and at the same time, I'll test a few store return policies.(thats a joke...maybe)

First, I'm going to need more disk space on my computer. I know a mac would be the best thing for editing, but my budget still won't allow that so PC is my only option. (unless someone knows a cheaper way to get a mac.) How much disk space is enough? Is a new computer the answer or will an external hard drive get by?

Next is the editing software. Right now I'm using Pinnacle studio 9. It's great if I dont need to use ANY cg effects. All the effects look cartoonish and on top of that, I have to pay to unlock certain effects packages. I can't burn to DVD, only video CD format. This works fine on "some" new DVD players but it's almost like playing roulette when it comes to showing my work to someone.Anybody got
any ideas on an upgrade?

I'll let the PC people advise on PC's.

You can get a used or reconditioned iMac at http://www.powermax.com for $600 to $1,000. They come with iMovie and iDVD - great, semi-pro software you can edit and burn DVD's with. I have purchased form them several times. I can vouch for their used and reconditioned equipment. And I know from actual experience that an iMac G4 has enough power to do what you need. I cut six feature movies using one.

They are even great about putting you on a waiting list for the exact computer you want. If you want to wait for an iMac G% to come up for sale, they'll notify you as soon as they get one.

I use an external drive on all my projects. Right now a good 200GB drive will run you under $175.

I'm going to piggyback off my own question here. My computer is doing this weird thing where the sound is slowed and distorted. Even the little windows jingle at the start up is slowed. at first I thought I could work around it but when I load my video footage, the sound comes out slower than the footage. It starts out in sync but after a few seconds or so, it looks like a poorly dubbed kung fu movie. Does or has anyone eles had this problem and what causes it? Can it be fixed?
