hey im sorry this is going 2 b such a newb question, but the thing is ive always had a sony hi8 camcorder and i hate, no computer hookup.

anyways, im considering buying a canon elura 70. the thing i need 2 know is can you upload stuff on a dv cassette to your comp for editing or does it need to be on a sd/multimedia card?

sorry if this is a dumb question, but if u could help me, it'd be great.

Hi,
If the camcorder has a FireWire or USB plug you can capture it into your computer probably no matter what, but you may need to buy a usb/firewire pci card for your computer if you dont have one. You can download free programs that can let you capture your movie, then you can edit them in whatever program you want, then burn them to dvd, or put them back onto a DV tape or whatever your pleased with.

If your Hi 8 Camcorder has Svideo or RCA outputs then you can download it to your computer. There are a couple companies out there that make connectors that go from svideo and RCA to USB connectors and most come with some basic movie editing software.
Here's a Link to one I've found.
But there are many others out there.

Woah, so I can download MiniDV cassette video via USB?

P.S. Thanks CCL, I'll check that out.

In my experience, videotransfer via USB is much slower then Firewire, USB 2.0 is a step in the right direction, however i would use firewire (or i-link) instead of USB. (I use a sony cam on an Apple e-Mac)
