I keep hearing about making "the jump" to HD. It sounds as though there are some serious investments to be made other than camera itself. What exactly would that include?

Not all editing software supports HD. FCP 5.1 or later does, any Avid that is currently for sale and... those are the only ones I bother with.
If you're trying to spit out blue-ray, you'll need a blue ray burner, and blue ray DVD authoring software (dvd studio does HDDVD).
