Hi, I am new to filmmaking.net and to film making world but not new to the world of films. I am a working professional who recently realized that making films would be something that i always wanted to do deep down but never explored. I considering Film school but giving it more time. In the mean time i would like to make films on my own. As an amateur where do i start? I do have a digital camcorder and a PC. What should be my next step?

You next step is to write a script or find an already finished
script or find a writer to write a script. However you do it,
your next step is to get a script.

Then you set the shooting dates, find a location (or locations),
put together a small crew (or just do everything yourself) and
the actors you need.

Then you shoot the movie.

It's going to be pretty bad. They almost always are. But you will
made a few connections, had some fun and learned a few things
about making a movie.

So you start that entire process all over again.

If you do it two times a year you will learn at a slower pace than
if you do it four times a year. If you make a short movie once a
month, you should be getting pretty good in about six to eight
months.

During that time you should volunteer on the projects of others.
Film students and other local independent filmmakers are a good
place to start.

Hey, our profiles are just the same. 🙂

Are you changing careers, or adding to your professional repertoire? Maybe we can trade ideas. 🙂

Thats wonderful piece of info. I am alone in this for the time being hence the script has to be developed by me. What would be a good length to begin with? Should it be a 5 minute movie or a longer one?

I am currently not planning to change career since i just got into one. But in the near future i see myself getting out and start making movies. I am gonna spend the time on preparing my profile for a film school.

Well, if you just started, perhaps you should concentrate on your career for two years. Then, after you've settled down, you will have more ideas on what kind of film you like. I'm thinking of doing films based on my line of work, and there are many human-interest stories, and, of course, documentaries are also always a possibility. But I can say that because I'm an old hand.

hmmm....correct but i would like to spend my spare time learning about cameras and script writing. I read a book by Blake Snyder called "Save the Cat" and it gave me a good idea about script writing. Is there a tool that i can used to write scripts?

Yes I would reccomend celtx. For its price (FREE !!) it is very good. As you are just getting into filmmaking I don't suggest you spend your limited funds on something like final draft. Celtx is a very useful tool.
