Also consider that if the story and everything is good there is the possibility a studio might like it and offer to give you a budget to shoot it correctly. This is what happened with Robert Rodriquez, but he talked them into a sequel instead.
Just make sure it looks as good as possible (proper lighting, 24p, good actors and audio) because if it looks amateurish even film won't save it.

I'm in the middle of shooting my feature. Budget is around $10k. Good chunk of that is the camera and the audio gear. I found linking up with film students solved a number of problems, they were able to get the audio gear (at least for awhile), lighting gear, and cheap insurance and permits as well as a few locations and a crew willing to work for credit.
I wrote my screenplay so that it used a bunch of locations but except for one major location all of the scenes at a location were somewhat isolated and could be finished in a day. This was to help scheduling and location management and give a larger feel to the movie.
The downside of my plan is that I have been shooting on weekends and the college students ran into midterms and ran out of energy about half way. Luckily they were able to see me through the completion of the main location, and the multiple isolated locations mean that I needed so many more actors, and the schedule issues that come with that.

iron - when you get round to making your film if you want a spare set of hands then im in hampshire too and i have a car so travel is not a problem. Said car has already lugged rocks and hay to turn pretty glouscester villages road into 16th century tracks for one film. I also know some local actors. Am quite good with the whole 1st AD type work and sets/props. Let me know if your interested nikisun?gmail.com ?:)?

Thanks for the offer, I may well take you up on that! Whereabouts in Hants are you?
Andover - but please don't hold it against me. Its not really by choice ?:)?

Andover, eh!? I can't comment really, I'm in Winchester which is hardly the glamour capital of the world! ?8D?
Tell that to all the tourists!
I went to Peter Symonds College. Know a few people with houses (well parents houses) in the area and a few people at the college still if you need to try and blag locations and if you need to shoot at games workshop (why on earth you would want to shoot at games workshop i don't know but hey) i know someone who works there.
small world!!

I can't tell anything to the tourists I'm afraid, I don't speak Faragashwaheeli!
Houses would be veerry useful actually, thanks for all your help so far! Much appreciated!
What are your ambitions then Nikisun? I'm senseing......your a young 'un.....and.....you harbour desires to direct? (doesn't everyone!??? ?:p?)
If you do, then I definitely have a project in mind that could be of interest to you!
Actually primarily I want to make films - i guess the ultimate in that is directing and that is the plan but being part of the team and part of the process is pretty cool too.
and as for young un ?? ..... i guess thats all relative. Its been a while since I was at Symonds anyway. I remember when the ghurka cafe was lauras and noahs did the best cheesy chips in winchester oh and when you could play giant connect 4 in the Firkin! If you get those refernces i'll be pleasently shocked 🙂
I'd definately be up for working on a project though. Just let me know.

Hahaha!!! Yes, I get ALL those references!! I bet I could come up some that you definitely wouldn't rememember, but I don't want to embarass myself!! ?:)?
So, what films have you made or worked on so far?
Sorry for the delay in replying - just got back from Seville where one day I WILL make a film set during Semana Santa because it would just be too fantatsic a setting not to.
My background is actually theatre based. In the new year I will be taking over a theatre group (amateur but working with professionals and professional equipment). As part of that we have done some film acting stuff.
Film wise - while still at Uni some friends tried to make a film which taught me an awful lot about how not to make a film (actually very valuable experience) then things were put on a back burner for a while and I was consentrating on acting/theatre stuff.
This summer I was working on a short film (30mins I think) based on the Hans Christian Anderson short story Big Claus Little Claus. Stephen Fry narrates. I'm not sure what I am credited as on that if anything because I was doing lots of different stuff. Assisting everyone really... which was great fun and a great way of seeing how it all works together. Plus I've just found out they used the way i suggested editing one of the main scenes so thats a nice boost. When I find out where its going to be shown I'll let you know. I think its doing festivals but i'll have to ask the producer.
Now I want to get more experience and start working on my own stuff.

Sounds great!
As for me, I'm very new to the whole filmmaking thing but I've sort of sat on the fringes of it for years writing stuff, working on a few shorts etc. Nothing major really.
If your interested in collaborating on anything then let me know. I've just finished the first draft of a script which I hope to be making soon in the new year.
Yeah I'd definately be up for that. Cool 🙂
I put my email in one of my earlier replies so let me know. If I manage to get anything off the ground any time soon then I'll post something.
My friend just reminded me that I could possibly get the Railway Inn (the gig bit)in Winchester as well if you needed that kind of location.

I know this topic is a couple years old, but I couldn't resist. These days, with the Red HD camera, is there any debate? Just make the feature. At this point, it's far better to be in the feature club than not.

Yep. There still is a debate. The RED is one hell of a cluncker.
So far it hasn't lived up to it's hype.
How was it when you worked with it, FilmmakingStuff?
