Hi all,
just wondering if there are any good resources out there that offer tips on how to tell a story with images. After learning about all sorts of "techy" theories at school, I feel like the most important aspect of filmmaking is simply to get the story told. Make it understandable for the audience. It's something we haven't really been taught yet ...
Any suggestions would be much appreciated,
Tom
Watch Silent movies.
Or, watch a regular movie with the volume off and no subtitles and really pay attention to the details.
I heard a filmmaker say that you should (a) Watch classic star trek episodes with the picture off and listen to the sound. They are all talky like a radio-show and you can understand pretty well without watching. (b) Watch Mission Impossible with out the picture and you will be totally lost. (c) Now watch both with the sound off and watching the picture and it is reversed. Star Trek with picture and no sound is generic incomprehensible while Mission Impossible totally makes sense without sound. They tell the story using picture.

Great,
thanks RJ. Any silent films you have in mind?
Also, do you mean the mission impossible and star trek series, or movies?
Cheers,
Tom

I addition to whatever movies RJ suggests I'm going to
suggest you watch all the silent films you can find. There
are thousands of amazing silent shorts to learn from.
Watch the "Silly Symphonies" of the 1930's and 40's. Very
few people pay attention to the story telling in those
shorts, dismissing them as Disney cartoons.
A little personal plug. Check out a film I made when I was
just starting. One location, one actor and one line.

Yes, the original tv series. They remade Mission Impossibles in the 80s and I'm not sure those apply.
Almost any silent movie should work since they were dealing without sound although I would check out Nosferatu and Passion of Joan of Arc. Nosferatu builds tension and creepiness and Passion of Joan of Arc is an amazing study of the factial expressions of those watching the trial. Also anything by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaten.

Cerified,
Nice vid. My goodness, if that was something you did when first starting, I would really like to see some of your most recent work.
The guy misfiring the shot gun was classic.
The camera angles were great too.
I busted a gut laughing when the guy was going to shoot the monster and the monster covered his eyes/face as to realize what was about to happen. Funny stuff.
Thanks for posting this vid.
