Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone can give me any ideas as to how to 'stage' a telephone conversation. Ideally, I want the person on the other end of the phone to be live, so the actress answering the phone can respond to what she is hearing & vice-versa. We obviously need to hear the caller on the soundtrack, but how can I acheive this?

To add to the complications the film is being shot 'live' in one shot, we can do re-shoots, but will have to start from the begininng each time...

if you have a good mic setup, mic the actor on the phone and have someone else read the other parts side of the conversation off screen. then do the same for the other person, that is, if you are going to have the person on the other end be in the scene. if you have the person off screen speak kind of softly and a decent directional microphone it works out pretty good. does this make sense? i feel like im rambling...

This film cost $31 million. With that kind of money I could have invaded some country.

I had a similar scene and one of my actors thought it might help if he called in and did the lines with the actor on camera. Not only did it help with the timing but his voice comes through on the audio slightly filtered by the phone as well. Worked really nicely. Lot of luck involved probably since it was a last minute thing and we didn't actually expect to pick up the audio from the phone.

Thanks for your help guys, not sure if this would work as we will be using radio mics, but I agree doing it 'live' will be better for timing etc. 🙂
